Rogue Machine Theatre has been serving the Los Angeles community for more than 18 years and has earned a national and international reputation for developing and producing new plays and plays new to Los Angeles.
Since 2008, we have produced more than 30 world premieres, primarily by local playwrights, and more than 35 West Coast or Southern California premieres. Nine of these world premieres have had significant subsequent productions elsewhere or have been published, including two Off-Broadway productions, two major regional theatre productions, and a production in London at the prestigious Donmar Warehouse. Rogue Machine received the Ovation Award for Best Season (2017), alongside fellow nominees including The Geffen Playhouse, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, and Center Theatre Group. That year, the company was nominated for 11 additional Ovation Awards.
Rogue Machine’s work has been consistently recognized by the Los Angeles theatre community. We have been nominated for the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and Ovation Awards for Best Production of the Year multiple times over the past decade and have received four LADCC Awards and three Ovation Awards for Best Production. Most recently, Rogue Machine productions were honored at the 2025 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards: Evanston Salt Costs Climbing (2005) was named one of the Best Productions of the Year, with Hugo Armstrong receiving the award for Best Lead Performance, and Corktown ’39 (2025) received awards for Best Direction and Best Scenic Design.
In addition to individual production honors, Rogue Machine has been recognized repeatedly for the strength of its overall seasons. The company has received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle’s Polly Warfield Award for Outstanding Season four times—in 2011, 2016, 2023, and 2025—making Rogue Machine the only theatre company to have received this honor that many times.
In total, Rogue Machine artists have been recognized with more than 60 awards for playwriting, directing, design, and acting.
THE MATRIX ERA
In December 2021, Rogue Machine took up residence at Los Angeles’ historic Matrix Theatre on Melrose Avenue, marking a major turning point for the company artistically, institutionally, and publicly. The move established a permanent home and enabled the creation of the immersive Henry Murray Stage, expanding Rogue Machine’s capacity to develop new work and present bold contemporary theatre in an intimate setting.
Early productions in the new space quickly established the Matrix as a destination for challenging, conversation-driven theatre. Will Arbery’s Heroes of the Fourth Turning (2023), directed by Guillermo Cienfuegos, became a sold-out hit and signaled the company’s renewed artistic momentum following the pandemic. The production drew strong audiences and critical attention, reaffirming Rogue Machine’s reputation for producing ambitious new work that sparks dialogue and community engagement.
In 2025, Evanston Salt Costs Climbing by Will Arbery became a defining production for the company, attracting widespread attention from audiences, artists, and industry leaders. The production sold out before previews, generated vibrant post-show discussions, and drew notable attendance from members of the national theatre community. Critics praised Rogue Machine’s continued artistic strength, and the Los Angeles Times recognized the company’s commitment to presenting work that is both intellectually rigorous and emotionally immediate. The production was later honored as one of the Best Productions of the Year by the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle.
The Matrix era has also been marked by new artistic leadership and renewed institutional momentum. In 2024, founding Artistic Director John Perrin Flynn appointed acclaimed director Guillermo Cienfuegos as Artistic Director, ushering in a new chapter focused on bold storytelling, expanded access, and increased national and international visibility. Under this leadership, Rogue Machine has continued to develop new work, strengthen relationships with artists and audiences, and build a reputation as a home for daring contemporary theatre.
The current season continues that trajectory with Jackie Sibblies Drury’s Pulitzer Prize–winning play Fairview, a funny, daring, and deeply unsettling examination of family, performance, and the insidiousness of race in America. The production has generated strong audience interest and widespread conversation, supported by partnerships with cultural organizations and community groups across Los Angeles.
Today, the Matrix Theatre has become synonymous with Rogue Machine’s artistic identity. From sold-out premieres and nationally recognized productions to vibrant post-show discussions and expanding audience engagement, the Matrix era represents a period of renewed stability, visibility, and creative ambition.
What began as a move into a historic building has evolved into a defining chapter in the company’s history: one marked by bold storytelling, strong critical reception, and a growing reputation as one of the most ambitious and accomplished theatre companies in Los Angeles.
